As the summer starts from end March, Mango fruits are available in the market. From children to old every one like mango. No one can say that he/she doesn’t like mango. It will stay in Indian markets till end of July or start of August. Mangoes first come as raw (unripe). These unripe mangoes are used for making pickle. Almost in every Indian house wife makes mango pickle, she may be from eastern most part of
India to western most part of India or from Northern most part of India to Southern most part of India. These unripe mangoes are of small size. These are also used for making Aam Panna. Aam panna is a syrup used in summer season to tackle heat. Aam panna is stored in bottles and can be served to guests during summer season.With unripe mangoes house wives prepare chatni (Sauce). Unripe mango is also used as ingredient for making some vegetables like Karela. Mango is grated in small pieces and then filled in Karela. It is very tasty vegetable. When I was a child my favourite curry was mango curry. Mango curry is cooked with Gud or sugar. This curry does not spoil for many days. Unripe Mangoes are used in making Jam. Mango Jam is among one of the delicious Jams.
When Mangoes are ripe they give very nice smell. We eat it in different ways. Some eat it directly after washing it. Some eat it with the help of spoon. During summer season mango juice is available in every juice shop. It is known as Mango Shake. Mango is also used flavour in Toffees.In India, if we go to some of the relatives or friends house we prefer to take mango in place of sweets. During summer season Mango will be readily available in every house, it may be the poorest or the richest. That’s why Mango is called the King of Fruits in India.
Mango trees can grow in maximum all types of soils. It survives in all climates. In Humid climate of coastal areas like in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra Alphonso (name of one type of mango) grows very well. In Kerala Thamboor is most popular. Its size is very big. Here it is available throughout from March to August. In Andhra Pradesh Banganpalli ( Name of Mango) is very famous for its sweetness and taste. In States like Haryana and Utter Pradesh Langra (name of mango) is well known for its fibres and sweet taste. Dashehari is one of the most famous Mangoes.
In different areas of India different types of varieties of Mangoes are found some of them are as follows: Alphonso, Bangarapalli, Badami, Chandrakaran, Chausa, Dashehari, Gulaab Khaas, Himayath, Kesar, Langra, Malda, Mallika, Moovandan, Mulgua, Naadan, Neelam, Pairi, Peddarasalu, Priyoor, Sindhoori, Thamboor, Undamaanga.
In the months of May and June we can buy Mangoes at Rs 20/- Kg to Rs 50/- Kg. In Southern States of India it is sold per dozen. In the month of March, April, July and August Mangoes are costlier.
